1 Whats your new show about?
The works in the show were produced on a journey I made this spring; I took a grandfather clock in a Hearse from London to the centre of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN Geneva, and destroyed it. The works in the show do not illustrate the ideas behind the trip, but they were all made while I was on the road in Europe.
The show is a collection of works that are a result of my weak anarchic gestures that I performed while on route to Geneva.

"'Mount Zion' by Will Corwin at George and Jørgen 3 May 2012 - 27 May 2012 In 2009, I wrote about Will Corwin’s subtle and sometimes elusive art when reviewing the group show The Young and the Restless at the Gordon Parks Gallery in the South Bronx. I had first seen the artist’s intriguing acrylic and graphite works on ruined plaster panels some three years earlier on a studio visit to 5 Pointz in Queens, a converted warehouse covered in sprawling and imaginative graffiti. Sadly, this important landmark of hip hop culture (itself an art of fragmentation) is set to be torn down in 2013 to make room for high-rise luxury condos, a victim of gentrification and an architectural ‘development’ of which the architect-turned-artist Corwin would not approve, and might well memorialize in his own inimitable style. For the 2009 Bronx exhibition, Corwin created and then partially effaced plaster panel portraits of Mendelssohn family members, which suggested the impossibility of Jewish assimilation by a certain point in German history, and which alluded to the attempts of the National Socialists to erase all memory of the contributions made by this famous Jewish family and thousands of others to German cultural life. Since I reviewed this exhibition, Corwin has continued to explore the suggestive possibilities of plaster in relief and fully sculptural forms (both polychromatic and bare bone white), working as an artist-in-residence in Hamburg, London, and elsewhere; and he has continued to address matters related to Jewish cultural memory, as well as a whole host of other issues, using this pourable and castable material to create his art objects. "

"Over Here: Three Americans in London, Testing the Boundaries between Object and Subject.
Will Corwin’s exhibition, Mt. Zion, at George and Jørgen [May 4 to May 27, 2012; 9 Morocco Street, London SE1] presents sculpture as a conjunction of indexicality and portent. The show takes nomination candidate Jon Huntsman, Jr.’s Mormon faith as its starting point and then correlates the religion’s origins with a salient moment in evolutionary anthropology. According to the Church of Latter Day Saints, founder Joseph Smith was led by an angel named Moroni to exhume invisible golden tablets inscribed with the history of an ancient community speculated to have resided in upstate New York. Synthesizing interests in the social and natural sciences, Corwin posits Lucy – the anthropomorphized, fossil remains of several hundred pieces of bone derived from a female Australopithecus afarensis – as an unwitting saint venerated as an icon of evolution. "
Climbing Mount Zion on Morocco Street
"William Corwin’s Mt Zion has just opened at the recently relocated George and Jorgen. Though a bit off-street, the gallery seems much more at home in London Bridge than it did above the Salvo off Regent Street.
It’s the industrious New York artist’s second solo show in London, and already his distinctive visual language has emerged. We make the journey to Mt Zion expecting some kind of revelation, of course. The smell of MDF and plaster, the absence of colour, and the clean lighting immediately convey that the basic framework and the bare bones are what concern us here." read more…

"The Bermondsey walk gets under way in bright sunshine, with a trip to Bermondsey newcomers George and Jorgen. Previously located just behind the Regent Street Apple store, George and Jorgen moved south to an old office building at the start of March. I'm lucky enough to catch the tail-end of their first exhibition in the new space, a solo show for hotly tipped young abstract painter Chris Baker. It's now finished – which is not much help to those of you planning on following my route – but their next show – sexually suggestive work by collaborative duo Paddy Gould and Roxy Topia – opens on the 30th March. Set up by George Barker and Ingrid Reynolds, George and Jorgen is fun, innovative, refreshingly lacking in artspeak twaddle, and alive with a bold, DIY energy: exactly the kind of gallery London needs."

George and Jørgen and Deutsche Bank are very proud to present the latest work by artist Tom Pope.
For this Time-Bound pilgrimage, he will take a grandfather clock from London to CERN, near Geneva, and bury it at the central point of the Large Hadron Collider. The project seeks to explore a concept that everyone has a relationship with: time. Departing at noon on Sunday March 25th 2012 from Golden Square in Soho, the centre of the London’s Circle tube line, Pope will take the grandfather clock in a hearse across Europe where a funeral will be held for it on Wednesday April 25th. While making his way there, Pope will meet with thinkers, theorists, scientists and the public to discuss the possible notion of living a life free of measured time. These conversations will directly inform the photographic and moving image work that will be exhibited in a solo show on his return to London this September at George and Jørgen. Using Pope’s blog www.timebound.co.uk you will be able track and record the progression of his journey and the evolution of the notion of living a life free of measured time. Recently graduating from the Royal College of Art, Pope was the winner of the Deutsche Bank Award in Art in 2011 for this proposed project: Time Bound."

G&J– We worked together for a few years in a gallery in the West End and talked about having our own one day. It is a challenge for any new gallerist to start out, especially without any Financial backing, so we were very lucky to get an opportunity from the Salvation Army in 2010. They had a vacant room above one of their charity shops just off Regent Street and we worked out an agreement to convert it into a gallery and use it for 9 months. "Where did the title ‘Akin to Nature’ come from? A lot of my influences come from different eras and different times in art history and I find it helps me to make sense of my own work. This exhibition came from a quote from Hans Bellmer. He was discussing the idea that mass culture is perceived by some to be akin to nature, which angered him apparently and got him thinking about misunderstanding in our society. He lived at a time when war was looming and when Nazis were emerging. It must’ve been a difficult concept to swallow."

"The idea behind his new collection of work is to attempt an understanding of physical shifts, through objects. Familiar settings and domestic objects are manipulated into a conversation of meaning. Throughout Nick’s work runs his flux between knowing and recognition, to uncertainty, confusion and break down. His interests in psychoanalytical ideas are confronted through the coarse and domestic. He endeavours to indicate something of an internal landscape by using external objects. Through working with carbon paper he suggests something about the way we leave a mark or imitate what has come before. It is at this moment that we hold our breath, to impress or to be impressed. What is outside must leave a mark inside, and so-forth."

"During the Second World War, in an attempt to safeguard the British shoreline from German invasion, an estimated 18,000 small watch-point structures were built, now commonly known as pillboxes. Having been left untouched since the 1945 declaration of peace across Europe, they have moulded themselves into the coastline and are today somewhat camouflaged by 21st century decay – many are now viewed as blank canvass for budding graffiti artists.
However, Martin Newth – acclaimed Manchester born photographer and current Course Director of BA Photography at Camberwell College of Arts – has gone beyond looking outside the box. Spending over two years tracking down pillboxes across the country (with many still to be discovered), he has collated a not only a fascinating collection of images documenting the ever changing British coastline, but also challenged the basic function of the structures themselves. Turning the pillboxes into cameras – “the process involves me blacking out the already dark structures completely and then putting a very simple lens into the apertures that were intended for a soldier to place his gun” – Newth has been able to capture images from a previously unseen viewpoint."

"Congratulations to Will Corwin , an American sculptor and frequent contributor to Saatchi Online, whose first show in London opened this month. Corwin has produced two site-specific sculptures that play with the architecture they inhabit, populating the gallery with alternative environments referencing peepshows and carnival/museum dioramas, and sculptural furniture. Both installations riff off the volume and decorative detailing of the exhibition space. The diorama is entitled “Diet of Worms, Part 2″ and the second sculpture is a shelving piece based on the Last Judgment mosaic in the Cathedral of St. Maria Assunta in Torcello. Several smaller shrine pieces and drawings are also on display."

"Visit the George and Jørgen gallery on Princes Street in Mayfair - a new art space perched above the Salvation Army charity shop, currently showcasing the intriguing installations of New York sculptor William Corwin. Part peep show, part museum diorama, the playful exhibition, Alans Wood, is appropriately named after the artist's first (and only) London landlord - a Yorkshireman who introduced Corwin to his girlfriend and the gallery's directors, Ingrid Reynolds and George Barker. He is, says Corwin, "a sort of northern English guardian angel." Alans Wood runs until April 2."

"Corwin produces site-specific sculptures that play with the architecture they inhabit, while also combining a poetic historical narrative redolent of Kiefer combined with a pure abstract aesthetic reminiscent of Nicholson in St. Ives and Twombly in Rome. "Corwin will create a series of site-specific sculptures at George and JØrgen, a brand-new gallery off Oxford Street, in March. Co-founder Ingrid Reynolds describes the gallery’s roster as ‘mostly artists at the beginning of their careers’ or, in Will Corwin’s case, exhibiting in a London gallery for the first time. Fellow founder George Barker believes that their West End location grants them important freedom because ‘we can avoid being fashionable, which means we can concentrate on showing artists we think are exceptional without being troubled by following the crowd.’ Corwin’s work also follows its own trajectory, evolving from figurative imagery painted on plaster panels, which form large ‘canvasses,’ to sculpture. This notion of a compartmentalized and expanding canvas has become the focal point of his recent work. His new abstract sculptures are reminiscent of old fashioned viewing boxes which invite you to look inside. On the other side is a surprising world, which expands the corporeality of sculpture to include an unreachable, miraculous, extra dimension."

"Landscape photography, though lovely, is rarely very exciting, but the techniques with which these artists have ‘intervened’ elevates the show way above the glut of Alpine sunsets and night time cityscapes that swamp offices and coffee tables worldwide. Swedish-Finnish artist Martina Lindqvist, for example, has produced three twilight landscapes (A Thousand Little Suns I, II and III) of ethereal beauty. The scenes seem to be lit by an omnipotent, eerie sort of stage lighting: or a thousand little somethings? Irregular points of focus pull the eye this way and that; the length of exposure has smoothed the grey luminescent skies into a superficial, dreamy backdrop, and desaturated the crisp geometric form of the factory. The result gently involves you in a landscape of brooding pathetic fallacy and solitary introspection. The George Lionel Barker (as in ‘…and Jorgen’) says Lindqvist is very secretive about how she creates her images, and is clearly delighted but little confused by the piece; these works tap into the lifeblood of the show’s theme. ‘It’s very Scandinavian,’ a Swede standing next to me confidently asserts."
